Burps and Farts
A look at the biological functions that produce burps and farts. Biology - Human Body - Learning Points. Burps are caused when swallowed air forces open the stomach sphincter and travels up the oesophagus. Farts are caused when swallowed air travels down the digestive tract and mixes with other gases. In the large intestine, bacteria produce hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide and methane. Hydrogen sulphide is responsible for the smell released when you fart. A Twig Context Film.
