By Imagine Learning - Twig (middle years+)From BoclipsOctober 10, 2025

When Phineas Gage's brain was injured in a freak accident, his personality changed giving scientists a unique opportunity to study brain function.

Biology - Being Human - Learning Points.

Phineas Gage, a railway construction foreman suffered an accident in which a 1m iron rod punctured his skull, damaging his frontal lobe.

Amazingly, Gage survived and was seemingly fully recovered within months.

Gage’s doctor continued to monitor him and observed a radical personality change – from smart and hardworking to impulsive, rude and vulgar.

These observations led to the theory of Brain Localisation – the brain is not just a homogeneous lump but consists of different areas with different functions.
