Upon viewing the Exploring Forest Biomes video series, students will be able to do the following: Explain that forest biomes vary greatly, but all are dominated by trees. Understand that forests receive moderate to high amounts of rainfall, and moderate temperature ranges that enable trees to thrive. Differentiate between the following three types of forest: deciduous forests, coniferous forests, and rain forests. Outline the general area of the temperate deciduous forest in North America. Explain that deciduous trees are broad-leaved trees that lose their leaves in late fall, and grow new leaves in the spring. Describe the four distinct seasons in the temperate deciduous forest. Cite a few examples of plants and a few examples of animals that live in temperate deciduous forests. Understand that great variations exist within temperate deciduous forests. These are mainly due to differences in climate. Identify and explain the general characteristics of coniferous trees. Outline the location, and describe some of the characteristics of the taiga. Cite a few examples of specific plants and animals that live in the taiga. Understand that rainforests receive over 200 centimeters of rain each year. Differentiate between tropical rainforests and temperate rainforests. List some of the valuable products we use from rainforests. Understand the importance of rainforests to the planet.
