Investigating Mixtures, Solutions, Elements, and Compounds: Pure Substances Elements
Upon viewing the Investigating Mixtures, Solutions, Elements, and Comnpunds video series, students will be able to do the following: Understand that everything we see, touch, and even things we can't see are made up of matter. Understand that matter is made of one or more elements. Define an element as a chemically pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. Cite examples of a couple different elements and describe some objects that contain the elements. Define a compound as a pure substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined. Provide an example of a compound, and describe its composition. Differentiate between an element and a compound. Explain that a mixture consists of two or more elements, compounds, or both that are together in the same place, but are not chemically combined. Explain that the individual parts of a mixture can be separated from the other things in a mixture. Understand there are different types of mixtures including suspensions, colloids, and solutions. Define a suspension as a mixture in which particles are relatively large and some particles settle out. Explain that in a solution the particles are small, evenly distributed, and do not settle out. Understand that in a colloid the particles are larger than those in a solution, but smaller than those in a suspension. The particles are continually floating. Identify the solute and solvent in a solution described by the instructor. Provide a common example of a suspension, colloid, and solution.
