Iron and Luminol
We use potassium ferricyanide and luminol indicator to show how forensic scientists detect blood at crime scenes. The luminol indicator contains luminol, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. When luminol comes into contact with the iron in potassium ferricyanide, the iron acts as a catalyst and the chemicals in the solution react to produce light.
Chemistry - Periodic Table - Learning Points.
Blood contains iron in its haemoglobin and it is the iron that gives the haemoglobin its red colour.
A solution containing luminol can be used to test for blood at crime scenes.
A Twig Experiment Film.
Let students experience real experiments in lab conditions anywhere, from setup, method all the way through to analysis and real-world application.
