THE 125-FOOT STATUE HAS STOOD UPON CORCOVADO MOUNTAIN SINCE ITS COMPLETION IN 1931. IT WAS BUILT USING DONATIONS FROM RICH BRAZILIAN CATHOLICS, AND LOCAL ENGINEER HEITOR DA SILVA COSTA OVERSAW THE CONSTRUCTION, USING STEEL AND SOAPSTONE.
