Earth Science - Geology - Learning Points. There are three main types of limestone: Carboniferous, Jurassic and Cretaceous. Carboniferous limestone is over 300 million years old, it is tough and the least porous type, it occurs in thick layers and often features in cave systems. Jurassic limestone is 135 to 208 million years old, is softer and more porous than carboniferous and is often used for building material. Cretaceous limestone, or chalk, is 66 to 144 million years old, is soft, porous and pure and forms the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. A Twig Context Film.
