Melatonin and Sleep

The hormone melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm - the body's sleep pattern. Melatonin lowers the body's temperature, causes drowsiness and regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Hormonal upheaval experienced during puberty is thought to push back the production of melatonin. The circadia rhythm is reset during adolescence meaning teenagers are kept awake by their bodies.
