Nutrition: a Balanced Diet
Upon viewing the Nutrition video series, students will be able to do the following: Define nutrition as a science that studies the interaction of the human body and food. State the six major kinds of nutrients including: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Provide a food example of each of the major kinds of nutrients. Generally explain how each of the specific nutrients are used by the body, and state why the nutrient is important. Generally explain what is meant by a "healthy diet". Understand that the Recommended Dietary Allowance is a guideline to help people understand the types and amounts of nutrients they need in their diet. Identify and explain the meaning of a food label on a container of food. Using the food pyramid, state and describe the five major food groups. List a couple of examples of food from each of the food groups. Understand that a person's diet is individualized and depends on their age, gender, and activity level. State other important factors involved in staying healthy including eating healthy snacks, eating foods low in saturated fats, and exercising regularly.
