Explain how instruments called global positioning systems (GPS) use satellites to pinpoint exact locations on Earth's surface. Differentiate between various types of maps and explain their use. Describe how map symbols are used to represent features on Earth. Identify the legend on a map and interpret symbols in the legend. Use a map's scale to measure distances on the map. Describe how a topographic map uses contour lines to represent changes in elevation on Earth's surface. Define relief as the difference in elevation between an area's highest and lowest points. Identify features such as hills, valleys, mountains, ridges, cliffs, and bodies of water on a topographic map. Interpret other features illustrated on a topographic map. Describe how topographic maps can be useful to people spending time outdoors.
