Despite popular perception that Saudi Arabia is a desert, the country actually has three climatic zones. There is a harsh, arid desert across most of the country. There is an area of steppe along the western highland region. There is also a small area in the southern highlands, along the border with Yemen, that experiences temperate conditions—it is humid and mild, and summers are long.
