Solutions at Work: Concentration of Solutions
Upon viewing the Solutions at Work video series, students will be able to do the following: Explain that a solution is a type of mixture made of two or more substances that are evenly distributed. Provide an example of a common solution. Differentiate between the solute and solvent in a solution. Provide an example of a solution and identify the solute and solvent. Understand that the process of dissolving occurs when particles in a substance separate, or spread out evenly in a mixture. Describe an alloy as a solid solution consisting of metals or nonmetals dissolved in metals. Explain that concentration is a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent. Compare and contrast solutions that have different concentrations. Understand that solubility is a measure of how well a solute can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature. List some of the factors that affect how quickly a substance dissolves in a liquid solvent. Examples include stirring, shaking, and crushing the solute. Describe acids as compounds that share certain properties when dissolved in water. A common property of most acids is a sour taste. List some examples of common acids such as lemons, limes, and vinegar. Explain that bases are compounds that share certain properties when dissolved in water. Many bases have a bitter taste and are slippery. Cite some common examples of bases such as soaps and ammonia.
