USB cables are of different types like Type A, Type B and Type C. This classification is based on type of the connector found at the end of a USB connector. Another way to classify USB is based on its generation like: USB 1.0 (oldest), USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and USB 4.0 (latest). Traditionally a USB cable comes with a Type A on one side and Type B on the other. The end which goes inside computer, laptop, smart TV etc. is Type A. The end which goes inside the other peripheral devices such as mobile, camera, hard drive etc. is Type B. And this Type B has many variants. Like the one you use in the external hard drive wouldn't plug into your smartphone. But this is going to change in the future with the adoption of newest type of USB: USB Type C. True USB Type C cable will have same connector at both ends of the USB cable. Perhaps in the future only a Type C cable would be all required to establish wired connection for data transfer between any two electronic devices.
