Autumn can produce brilliant colors in the leaves. In spring and summer, the leaves of trees use chlorophyll to turn sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food, and that makes leaves green. As daylight diminishes in autumn, less chlorophyll is made, so green fades away and yellow and orange start to appear.
