3I/ATLAS NEW IMAGE Shocks Scientist | No One Can Explain This
New SPHEREx image of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS shows a blood-red, CO₂-dominated spherical coma \~348,000 km wide at \~3.2 AU. CO₂ outgassing near 70 kg/s with minimal H₂O challenges standard comet behavior. Brightness suggests either a \~46 km nucleus or sunlight reflected by fine coma particles. Symmetric reflectivity and the lack of a classic tail intensify debate over natural vs. unusual processes. Comparisons to ʻOumuamua highlight how rare this pattern is and where models fall short. Upcoming observations will test competing explanations and refine size, composition, and any non-gravitational effects.
