How Do Caves Form?
A look at caves of all shapes and sizes: how do they form? And what creates the strange stalactite and stalagmite structures that can be found inside? Earth Science - Geology - Learning Points. Caves are natural underground holes carved by water. Sea caves are formed by the power of the ocean. Acidic rainwater dissolves limestone to form caverns. Stalactites are formed as chemical-rich water deposits calcium carbonate that runs through the rock and from the roof. Stalagmites are formed as calcium carbonate collects on the ground.
