There are four forms of river erosion: attrition, abrasion, hydraulic action and corrosion. In the upper course of a river vertical erosion creates steep valleys, and uneven riverbeds form rapids and interlocking spurs. Waterfalls are formed when a soft layer of rock is eroded beneath a harder layer of rock creating an overhang.
