Area is the space inside a 2D shape. The rule for calculating the area of a rectangle is Length X Width.This formula doesn't work for compound shapes (shapes that are made up of two or more basic shapes).If we break down a compound shape into more simple geometric shapes (e.g. rectangles), we can work out the area of those simple shapes and add the areas together to find the total.
