How to Write Terminating and Repeating Decimals as Fractions
In this video lesson we will learn how to write terminating and repeating decimals as fractions. We will discover that a terminating decimal is a number the "ends". We will write the terminating decimal as a fraction while reviewing place value and how to mathematically say the value aloud. We will then learn that a repeating decimal is a decimal with a repeating pattern of a number or numbers. We will learn that the repeating bar is formally known as a vinculum. We will discover a pattern in the denominator and make connections with the number of digits in the repeating pattern. We will also prove mathematically why the pattern exists using algebraic equations. We will also review that terminating and repeating decimals are rational numbers since they can be written as fractions. Student practice is embedded in the lesson with modeled exemplar solutions.
