Science Experiment: Disappearing Flames
For today's experiment, we will explore the science of fire and learn some fire safety along the way. For this, you'll need tea lights, different sized blocks, and a glass jar that can cover all of these items. When we put the jar over the lit flames, candles go out one by one, from tallest to shortest. Why is that? Just like us, fire needs air to breathe. When we put the candles in a jar, we aren't letting any new air in. Fire breathes in the air and lets out smoke. The smoke rises towards the top of the jar. The fire keeps breathing the air until smoke fills the jar from top to bottom. Fire can't breathe smoke, so the flame goes out once the air is gone.
